The Church of Kopimism / Isak Gerson
Dom Omladine / 28.04 / 15:00
This 19-year-old philosophy student from Stockholm had a couple of issues while attempting to get his church, the Church of Kopimism, recognized by the Swedish authorities.
The main belief of this religion is that copying and sharing information are ethically correct and one of their key dogmas is that CTRL+C i CTRL+V are sacred symbols. The first two attempts to get the recognition were unsuccessful. The reason for the first failed attempt was the fact that they hadn’t formalized the way of praying and meditation, which are, as the Swedish law states, one of the key points in establishing a church. The failure of the second attempt is unknown. On January 5th, 2012 Isak and his fellow kopimists finally fulfilled their goal. Even though the Church of Kopimism is accepted as a religion, that doesn’t mean that copyright infringement is now permitted. Not yet, anyway. Because of the rather unusual reasons for establishing a religion, this story was covered in most media around the world.
