Alternative Controlers
Create a music instrument with your favorite Joystick, Wiiremote or Arduino sensor board. Steim's software engineer Frank Baldé will show you how to turn a game controller into a music instrument using Steim's junXion software (http://www.steim.org/steim/junxion_v4.html). In this workshop not only any kind of game controller can be brought to use as a musical instrument, but also Arduino boards with dedicated sensors. Steim will bring a number of game devices and an Arduino with some sensors to demonstrate the creation of different music implementations of these devices. Feel free to bring you own game devices!
Frank joined Steim Foundation in Amsterdam in 1985 and started his work as software designer. A big influence has been the close collaboration with Michel Waisvisz, the artistic director of Steim (who passed away in 2008) which resulted in a number of music programs for live performance.
In 1988 one of his own music programs, MidiDraw was published by the American software company Intelligent Music.
At Steim he created amongst others 'Deviator', a midi processing program for the Atari ST and together with Michel Waisvisz a program called 'The Lick Machine', realtime midi manipulation software for the Atari ST and the Apple Machintosh. In the nineties he has been working on a software sampling package called 'LiSa' for the Apple computers and the last years on a software program called junXion, which can read any kind of 'real-world' sensor data and process / translate it into MIDI or OSC.
Frank Baldé also teaches at the Sonology department of the Royal Conservatory in the Hague. Besides the software develoment work Baldé also activily supports Steim visiting artists in helping them create their new instrument mappings using junXion.
